Quinnisha Marion: Good evening and welcome to the University of West Georgia’s Podcast station. I am your host Quinnisha Marion and I have a special guest with me discussing his experience in using technology at his current place of employment and before I give you any details. Please allow him to introduce himself.
Andre Winston: Andre Winston Assistant Principal at Bear Creek Middle School. This is my eighth year as an administrator.
QM: How many years teaching?
AW: Seven
QM: 15 years in education?
AW: Yes
QM: Mr. Winston, Why do you think veteran teachers are reluctant to add technology in the classroom?
AW: I think it is a matter of comfort level and veteran teachers are not familiar with the level. They are use to are use to certain method of teaching that requires pen or paper or some other type of manipulative. Not use to the newer like computers and they are comfortable with physical keyboards than the iPads. I think it is a comfort level of trying something new in the class and not being successful with it.
QM: Thank you! What are some challenges that Bear Creek faces in implementing technology?
AW: Oh that is a good question. I think some of the things that challenges Bear Creek are probably the comfort level of the staff members and the amount of resources that we have available and just being equitable. Making sure everyone has the opportunity to utilize, the maintenance and upkeep of such a large number of machines. We will have over 500 laptops in the building by the end of the school year and we only have one tech specialist. That is not including the number of labs that we have in the building with desktops and iPads. Along with that comes the bandwidth or Wi-Fi that we have with it crashing or moving slow. It is basically like a funnel we have a wide array of devices going into one Wi-Fi signal. I think that slows down the processing and teachers are not able to use it effectively.
QM: How do you think Apple products specifically the iPad will transform education?
AW: Another great question. The iPad offers so many possibilities. It is very engaging for the kids. Kids are able to use the camera as document cameras. They are able to mirror using the LCD or HDTVs to share their presentations. They are able to various apps in their classrooms with iTunes University and the variety of textbooks available. So basically, a child can carry around an iPad or an iPad mini and be able to leave their textbooks in the classroom or locker altogether and receive a digital download code to download the textbook for all their classes. This can eliminate all these lockers because the student will come to school with the iPad, pencil, and paper. It engages the kids and decreases the need of material needed because everything will be electronic. It gives us a wide array of teaching strategies through iTunes University and iBooks and through the App store. We will have a large variety of that can be used as response pads. The kids really enjoy them and great sense of responsibility with the iPad because of what it offers versus a textbook.
